Project: MATE – An Innovative, Student-Centered Approach to Intercultural Skills Acquisition for Students and Young Migrants

MATE Project

MATE (“Mingle, Acknowledge & Trust Events”), an innovative, student-centered approach to intercultural skills acquisition for students and young migrants, funded under Erasmus+ call for proposals KA2 - "Cooperation for Innovation and the Exchange of Good Practices", in the field of "Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education" (KA203), has officially started on the 1st of December 2018 and it will be concluded on the 31st of December 2020.

The 1st Transnational Meeting of MATE took place in Nicosia, Cyprus, at the premises of the Mediterranean Management Centre Limited (M.M.C.), with the participation of all project partners: M.M.C. from Cyprus (coordinator partner), Cyprus University of Technology from Cyprus, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from Greece, Folkuniversitetet Stiftelsen Kursverksamheten Vid Uppsala Universitet from Sweden, FH Joanneum Gesellschaft mbH from Austria, Eurocircle Association from France, and University of Alicante from Spain.

On the first day of the meeting, all partners presented their organisation (type, key expertise, main operations) as well as their experience in relation to the project. M.M.C. then made an overview of MATE’s perspective, aims, objectives, and expected results. The meeting continued focusing on the first two deliverables of the project, i.e. "European Report: Common forms of hate speech online (social media) and offline (face-to-face communication)" (IO1) and "Intercultural skills assessment online tool" (IO2). Review of IO1 was made by the University of Alicante, which allocated relevant tasks, while M.M.C. gave the typology of "Hate Speech". The IO2 was presented by Eurocircle and allocation of tasks was also made. The first day closed with partners’ discussion, followed by a social dinner.

The second day of the meeting started with the Project Management and Coordination presentation by M.M.C., concerning contracts and financial reports, the Project Management Reference Guide, a general overview of the Gantt Chart as well as planning of the next meetings. The meeting continued with FH Joanneum’s presentation on Quality Assurance and Eurocircle’s presentation on project’s dissemination activities, which included the Dissemination Strategy Guide, the dissemination material, and the project logo. At the closure of the day, there was discussion on second day’s presentations and overall evaluation of the kick-off meeting.
